Light therapy is clearly enjoying a surge in popularity. Consumers can purchase light-emitting tools for everything from dermatological concerns and fine lines along with sore muscles and gum disease, the latest being an oral care tool equipped with small red light diodes, described by its makers as “a breakthrough for domestic dental hygiene.” Globally, the market was worth $1bn in 2024 and is projected to grow to $1.8bn by 2035. You can even go and sit in an infrared sauna, that employ light waves rather than traditional heat sources, your body is warmed directly by infrared light. As claimed by enthusiasts, the experience resembles using an LED facial mask, enhancing collagen production, soothing sore muscles, relieving inflammation and chronic health conditions as well as supporting brain health. Understanding the Evidence “It feels almost magical,” says Paul Chazot, professor in neuroscience at Durham University and a convert to the value of light therapy. Of course, certain impacts of light on human physiology are proven. Our bodies produce vitamin D through sun exposure, essential for skeletal strength, immune function, and muscular health. Natural light synchronizes our biological clocks, additionally, activating brain chemicals and hormonal responses in daylight, and signaling the body to slow down for nighttime. Types of Light Therapy Although mood lamps generally utilize blue-spectrum frequencies, consumer light therapy products mostly feature red and infrared emissions. During advanced medical investigations, including research on infrared’s impact on neural cells, determining the precise frequency is essential. Photons represent electromagnetic waves, extending from long-wavelength radiation to the highest-energy (gamma waves). Phototherapy, or light therapy employs mid-spectrum wavelengths, with ultraviolet representing the higher energy invisible light, then the visible spectrum we perceive as colors and finally infrared detectable with special equipment. Dermatologists have utilized UV therapy for extensive periods to manage persistent skin disorders including eczema and psoriasis. It affects cellular immune responses, “and reduces inflammatory processes,” notes a skin specialist. “Considerable data validates phototherapy.” UVA reaches deeper skin layers compared to UVB, whereas the LEDs we see on consumer light-therapy devices (which generally deliver red, infrared or blue light) “tend to be a bit more superficial.” Safety Protocols and Medical Guidance UVB radiation effects, like erythema or pigmentation, are well known but in medical devices the light is delivered in a “narrow-band” form – meaning smaller wavelengths – that reduces potential hazards. “Therapy is overseen by qualified practitioners, so the dosage is monitored,” notes the specialist. And crucially, the devices are tuned by qualified personnel, “to guarantee appropriate wavelength emission – as opposed to commercial tanning facilities, where it’s a bit unregulated, and wavelength accuracy isn’t verified.” Home Devices and Scientific Uncertainty Red and blue LEDs, he says, “aren’t typically employed clinically, but could assist with specific concerns.” Red light devices, some suggest, help boost blood circulation, oxygen uptake and dermal rejuvenation, and activate collagen formation – an important goal for anti-aging. “Research exists,” says Ho. “Although it’s not strong.” Regardless, given the plethora of available tools, “we’re uncertain whether commercial devices replicate research conditions. Appropriate exposure periods aren’t established, how close the lights should be to the skin, if benefits outweigh potential risks. Numerous concerns persist.” Targeted Uses and Expert Opinions Initial blue-light devices addressed acne bacteria, microorganisms connected to breakouts. Scientific backing remains inadequate for regular prescription – even though, explains the specialist, “it’s often seen in medical spas or aesthetics practices.” Some of his patients use it as part of their routine, he says, however for consumer products, “we just tell them to try it carefully and to make sure it has been assessed for safety. Unless it’s a medical device, the regulation is a bit grey.” Advanced Research and Cellular Mechanisms Meanwhile, in innovative scientific domains, researchers have been testing neural cells, identifying a number of ways in which infrared can boost cellular health. “Pretty much everything I did with the light at that particular wavelength was positive and protective,” he reports. It is partly these many and varied positive effects on cellular health that have driven skepticism about light therapy – that it’s too good to be true. The researcher primarily focuses on pharmaceutical solutions for brain disorders, though twenty years earlier, a GP who was developing an antiviral light treatment for cold sores sought his expertise as a biologist. “He developed equipment for cellular and insect experiments,” he says. “I was pretty sceptical. It was an unusual wavelength of about 1070 nanometres, that nobody believed did anything biological.” Its beneficial characteristic, though, was its efficient water penetration, meaning it could penetrate the body more deeply. Mitochondrial Effects and Brain Health Growing data suggested infrared influenced energy-producing organelles. Mitochondria produce ATP for cell function, generating energy for them to function. “Every cell in your body has mitochondria, particularly in neural cells,” explains the neuroscientist, who prioritized neurological investigations. “It has been shown that in humans this light therapy increases blood flow into the brain, which is generally advantageous.” Using 1070nm wavelength, mitochondria also produce a small amount of a molecule known as reactive oxygen species. At controlled levels these compounds, notes the scientist, “activates protective proteins that safeguard mitochondria, look after your cells and also deal with the unwanted proteins.” These processes show potential for neurological conditions: free radical neutralization, anti-inflammatory, and waste removal – self-digestion mechanisms eliminating harmful elements. Ongoing Study Progress and Specialist Evaluations The last time Chazot checked the literature on using the 1070 wavelength on human dementia patients, he states, several hundred individuals participated in various investigations, incorporating his preliminary American studies
