UK Expands Methanol Toxicity Advisory List with Eleven Countries

Methanol caution sign

British authorities has placed an additional eleven more nations to its travel alert list about the risks of industrial alcohol contamination from adulterated beverages.

The revised travel guidance features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "a global increase in the incidence of confirmed occurrences" of industrial alcohol toxicity.

Just last month, the government had earlier added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, after a number of serious incidents like the tragic loss of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being warned that even small amounts of methanol can result in permanent eye damage or death within 12 to 48 hrs.

Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Employed?

Methanol is a toxic industrial alcohol typically used in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and thinner. It is not meant for human consumption.

While it is generated during the production of beverages, reputable manufacturers reduce it to low, safe levels for drinking through the purification method.

However in various destinations, it is surreptitiously added into spirits to cut costs, and because it is flavorless and scentless, it is extremely challenging to notice.

Authorities' Recommendations for Tourists

Foreign Office minister Hamish Falconer emphasized that every traveler should know the signs of methanol poisoning.

"While drinking spirits abroad, stick to reputable establishments and avoid local brews or free shots," the minister advised.

"Should anything feels off, for example a fatigue that's way worse than usual or sight issues – seek medical attention right away."

The full roster of countries noted as carrying a threat of methanol poisoning presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
